Rising Oil Prices Could Push Up the Cost of School Trips and Group Coach Travel in Northern Ireland
Mar 03, 2026
Recent global events are beginning to have a real impact closer to home, with rising oil prices already affecting energy costs and fuel prices across Northern Ireland.
Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have pushed global oil prices higher in recent weeks, and that increase is now being felt by households and businesses alike. Reports have already highlighted sharp increases of up to 60% in home heating oil costs across Northern Ireland, and the same market pressures are now influencing diesel prices used by the transport industry with fuel at the pumps rising 15-20p per litre already in the first week of March.

For coach operators, fuel is one of the largest operational costs involved in providing passenger transport. As diesel prices rise, the cost of running coaches and minibuses inevitably increases as well with the average coach having a fuel tank capacity of 400 litres meaning at £1.45 per litre it would cost nearly £600 to fill a 53 seater coach, which on average only covers about 600 miles. If you compare this to an average family car, to a fill up a tank would cost around £50 on average and cover about 350 miles.
At Executive Travel NI, we operate executive minibuses and coaches for a wide range of journeys including school trips, airport transfers, golf tours, weddings, corporate transport and group travel across Northern Ireland and Ireland. Like many transport operators, we are now unfortunately seeing the knock-on effects of global fuel price increases.

As we move into the busy spring and summer travel period, many schools, youth organisations, sports clubs and community groups will be planning trips and excursions. This is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for coach travel.
However, due to the rise in fuel costs, groups planning trips over the next few months may unfortunately find that transport costs are higher than similar journeys last year.
Coach operators will always try to absorb increases where possible, but significant changes in diesel prices are ultimately outside the control of transport providers. When fuel prices rise globally, the cost of operating each journey increases.

At Executive Travel NI, we always aim to keep pricing fair and competitive, particularly when working with schools and community groups. Our team will continue to look at ways to mitigate the impact of rising costs through careful planning and efficient scheduling of vehicles wherever possible.
Despite the challenges created by fluctuating fuel prices, our focus remains the same, delivering safe, professional and reliable transport for groups travelling across Northern Ireland and beyond.
From school trips and educational visits to golf tours along the Causeway Coast, weddings, corporate travel and airport transfers, coach travel continues to play a vital role in connecting people, communities and experiences.
Groups planning travel over the coming months are encouraged to book early where possible, as this helps operators plan journeys efficiently and secure vehicle availability during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
While global energy markets may influence fuel prices, what remains constant is the commitment of local operators like ourselves at Executive Travel NI to provide high-quality transport services for customers across Northern Ireland.
