Rising Oil Prices Could Push Up the Cost of School Trips and Group Coach Travel in Northern Ireland

Recent global events are beginning to have a real impact closer to home, with rising oil prices already affecting energy costs and fuel prices across Northern Ireland.

Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have pushed global oil prices higher in recent weeks, and that increase is now being felt by households and businesses alike. Reports have already highlighted sharp increases of up to 60% in home heating oil costs across Northern Ireland, and the same market pressures are now influencing diesel prices used by the transport industry with fuel at the pumps rising 15-20p per litre already in the first week of March.

For coach operators, fuel is one of the largest operational costs involved in providing passenger transport. As diesel prices rise, the cost of running coaches and minibuses inevitably increases as well with the average coach having a fuel tank capacity of 400 litres meaning at £1.45 per litre it would cost nearly £600 to fill a 53 seater coach, which on average only covers about 600 miles. If you compare this to an average family car, to a fill up a tank would cost around £50 on average and cover about 350 miles.
